To be HIPAA compliant you are required to pass a very stringent set of compliance tests.  We do have our servers set up so that our database and our web servers are separate (a requirement of HIPAA compliance) and we have security measures in place that help protect them.

However, there are variables like “no one else can have access to the data,” “data must be stored internally,” and so on that we can’t comply with because our servers are managed by Amazon Inc., who has employees that would have access to our physical servers.

In every way we can we are HIPAA compliant, but there are some areas in which we cannot be compliant due to our hosting situation.
